How NOT to Pig-Out this Thanksgiving!
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 01:48 PM EST [General]
Here are some tips from the authors of Eat, Shrink & Be Merry with some tips on how you can cut the fat at your holiday dinner with only minor changes. BUT, before we get to their advice- here's my own personal tip. Don't wear pants with an elastic waist. If you show up to the table Turkey day with a waistband that will expand without any consequences- you're setting yourself up to fail. I'm not saying you should wear tight pants, just pants that fit. Now the expert advice... 1. No Frying -- Deep frying turkeys has become more popular over the past couple years, even though it's bad news for the arteries. The problem gets worse if the temperature of the cooking oil gets below 340 degrees -- the oil seeps into the turkey meat, adding to the fat content. "Keep it simple. Roast your turkey," says Janet Podleski. 2. Whole Grains -- Replace some -- if not all -- of the white bread in your stuffing recipe with high-quality whole-grain bread. 3. Avoid Second Helpings -- Northwestern University dietician Annie Neuendorf tells her patients they can eat whatever they'd like on Thanksgiving. The only catch is everything must fit on one plate. When it's gone, it's gone. Phoner: Annie Neuendorf, Northwestern University: (312) 926-9355 4. Eat slowly -- Savor the meal and your company. The slower you eat, the less you'll eat since your body will be able to tell you that it's full. 5. Avoid the Pie -- Most piecrusts are made with either lard or shortening. Either way, they're full of fat. It will be difficult, but steer clear of a big wedge and, if you must, just sample a forkful. Tags:

Girl Talk with Sis... "Are Guys more insensitive?"
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 10:47 AM PST [Girl Talk With SIS]
Today's Topic: "Are guys just more insensitive?" Okay so ladies, we've all been there.... We either get dumped or for whatever reason we break up with our boyfriend and then he moves on like the very next day. Okay, well maybe not the next day but you know what I mean. Ummm hello, what was I ...chop liver? It just seems like they are so much more unemotional about break ups then girls are. And you know what, I'm not even mad at it... I wish I could move on or think like a guy does sometimes; it would probably save me a lot of unnecessary heartache. I'm seriously curious though... are guys just built to handle emotion better than woman?? Blaaahhhh, a confused Thursday for Sisanie... LOL. Xoxo, Sisanie Tags:
Still lurking
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 10:46 AM PST [General]
So I know I havent been here for a LONG while. Thought I better drop a line and let everyone know whats up. So this summer my husband left me and it has taken a lot to get back on my feet. I also have recently moved. The new house I have been doing lots of construction on and fixing up plus the whole still trying to unpack.
It seems I am behind on everything and dont even have any time to spend with friends.
I need a vacation.....
Things are slowly turning into some form of normality... (what ever that is) and I min or two of being able to breath (at least between homework and kids) may happen once more.
I do miss you all and please forgive my long absence .. I will try and lurk about occationally as I am able..
Hugs to you all.

Stray Pit Bull Saves Woman, Child from Attacker
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 12:40 PM CST [General]
November 5, 2008
A dog came out of nowhere and stopped a knife-wielding robber from accosting a mother and her young son on Monday afternoon. (Pet Pulse Illustration by Tim Mattson) PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The wandering 65-pound Pit Bull mix might have seemed menacing to some passerby, but one woman will always remember him as her "guardian angel." The dog, which authorities think is lost and not a stray, successfully thwarted a robbery attack on a mother and her 2-year-old son, who were held at knifepoint Monday afternoon. The Florida woman, who has been identified by authorities simply as "Angela," was leaving a playground with her toddler son in Port Charlotte when a man approached her in the parking lot with a knife and told her not to make any noise or sudden movements. Angela didn't have to do either to protect herself and her child -- a dog mysteriously ran to the scene and charged the man, who quickly fled. "I don't think the dog physically attacked the man, but he went at him and was showing signs of aggression, just baring his teeth and growling and barking. It was clear he was trying to defend this woman," Animal Control Lt. Brian Jones told Pet Pulse. "I don't know what this man's intentions were, but it is very possible this dog saved her life." The exceptional part of the story, Jones said, is that the dog had never met or even seen the people it quickly jumped to defend. "You hear about family dogs protecting their owners, but this dog had nothing to do with this woman or her kid," Jones said. "He was like her guardian angel." After the alleged thief ran away, Angela quickly placed her son, Jordan, in the car and tried to drive off. Before she could, though, the dog jumped into her backseat, waiting with her for the police and animal control officers to arrive at the scene. The dog was transported to a local shelter and if his owners don't step forward within five days, Jones said, Angela and her family plan to adopt the savior she named "Angel." Animal control officers and shelter workers believe Angel is lost, and not a stray, because of his good health, sturdy weight and mild temperament. "It's funny, that someone's irresponsibility could have saved someone's life," Jones said of Angel's possible owners. For Angela, it doesn't matter where the dog came from, just that he was there when she needed him most. "I don't know what his [the thief's] intentions were -- I don't know why he did it, but I'm glad that -- we call him Angel -- I'm glad that Angel showed up because I don't know what would have happened," Angela told NBC2 News. For a small town with a population of 46,452, animal control officers were kept busy Monday afternoon. Jones says they department also responded to a report about a boa constrictor in a church parking lot. The snake found its way into a car engine and was able to be removed without being harmed. It took three people to move the massive, seemingly random placed snake. "It's funny, because we aren't a big place," he said of the Gulf Coast town. "And we can go for four or five months without the media contacting us about a story. It's been a busy week." Officers from the responding county sheriff's office canvased the area and were unable to locate the suspect described as being in his 20s, tall and dark haired. Pet Pulse reporter Amy Lieberman and NBC-2.com contributed to this article.

Putting an End to "David vs Goliath"
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 01:39 PM EST [General]
A decade or so ago on an episode of WCW Monday Nitro Rey Misterio shocked the wrestling world by scoring a clean pin over Kevin Nash. Nash took a lackadaisical approach to the match with the much smaller Misterio and was caught "napping" as it were. The match itself worked because of the way it was booked; Nash dominant through most of it but overconfident and ended up losing to a man he should have easily beaten due to his ego. Fast forward to modern day World Wrestling Entertainment and Rey Misterio, all 5'-6" 165lbs of him (and I think those stats are inflated, if he's a quarter of an inch over 5'-4" then I'm Superstar Billy Graham) is embroiled in a feud with the big monster Kane. Like Big Sexy before him Kane is near 7' tall and over 300lbs, but unlike Misterio's match with Nash his matches with Kane are not working and are flatter than can of soda that's been left out for a week. The reason for this is because Rey is being booked as if he's Kane's equal (or even superior to the Big Red Machine) when anybody over the age of 10 can plainly see that he is not. Many Internet pundits ("dirt sheet writers") complain that the Big Show is so much bigger than the majority of his opposition that is impossible to suspend disbelief enough to buy that they could actually hurt him in any way, with few exceptions like Undertaker. I am here to make the argument that Rey is on the opposite end of the spectrum: he's so small that I find it impossible to suspend belief enough to buy that he can actually hurt an average sized wrestler, much less a large individual such as Kane. It is just too much to ask of me as a viewer to say "wow, Rey hit a 619 on Kane and splashed him for the 1-2-3" without dismissing it as ridiculous. The major problem is not only is Rey small for a wrestler/superstar/entertainer/whatever, he's small when compared to the average sized man. At 5'-11" I am slightly taller than average and would absolutely tower over Rey, he wouldn't even come up to my shoulders. I'm pretty sure that if I were not able to physically take Rey in a fight (he is an athlete after all whereas I am not) I would be able to put a hurt on him and he would feel the affects of the encounter. If I were to tangle with Kane it would be a much different story. I would be destroyed with but a mere dismissive blow, left on the ground and in the fetal position. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that Rey should not be in the ring, but he most definitely should not be going toe to toe with the likes of Kane. Other than Rey coming to the ring with a glock and shooting Kane right between the eyes there is no plausible way that Kane can be defeated. I realize that wrestling is "scripted" and the matches are not "contested", but there has to be at least a modicum of believability. Why not bring back the Cruiserweight Title and division where Rey, Evan Bourne and all of the other little spot monkeys who wouldn't know ring psychology if it bit them in the crotch can do their thing without stepping into the ring with the likes of Kane, Khali, Show etc.? WCW proved that a Cruiserweight division can work. Start off with a tourniment to crown the new champion, have Rey win it since he is by far the biggest name of all the smaller guys on the roster, and give him an extended run with the title to give it credibility before having him drop it to someone else? One thing's for sure, this whole "David vs Goliath" fairy tale stuff has got to stop. Please stop insulting my intelligence. Next: How'd they find a way to make attractive women in skimpy outfits absolutely boring? Tags:
New Paintings
Thursday, November 20, 2008, 01:38 PM EST [General]
I've been holding out a little while, but I just uploaded six new paintings (well, technically two of them are drawings) on deviantART [link], three of which are from my calendar. I only have to do two more paintings for the calendar, plus a design for the cover, and then it will be done. The November painting is already started, and I'm going to post two sketches of it in my next blog post [link]. I also have other work-in-progress images of some of the other paintings featured there. In other news, I've also set up an account on Flickr [link] where I'll be posting some of my work that I think represents what I'll be doing more of in the future. Tags:
